Suspect Arrested in Attempted Armed Vehicular Hijacking

On July 24, 2026, at 10:19 a.m., officers on patrol in the areaof South Ottawa Street and McDonough Street were approached by a man who reported that aman had attempted to steal his pickup truck at gunpoint.
A preliminary investigation determined that the victim was driving a pickup truck southbound onSouth Ottawa Street near Wallace Street when he stopped to avoid striking a man who was walking in the roadway. The man allegedly approached the driver’s side of the truck, displayed a handgun, pointed it at the victim, and ordered him to exit the vehicle.
The victim complied and exited the truck. The suspect then allegedly attempted to take thevehicle but, after realizing it was equipped with a manual transmission, abandoned the attempt, instructed the victim to leave, and fled the area on foot.
Officers quickly located the suspect in the 100 block of South Joliet Street. When officers attempted to make contact, the suspect fled while holding an item in his pocket. Moments later, the suspect was apprehended and taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was identified as Antwon Williams (41, Joliet). During a search incident to his arrest, officers recovered suspected cocaine.
Officers, assisted by a Will County Sheriff’s Office K-9, conducted an extensive search of the area but were unable to locate the handgun allegedly used during the incident.
The investigation was reviewed by the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, which approved charges of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Obstructing a Peace Officer. Williams was processed at the Joliet Police Department and transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
