Here are the upcoming Forest Preserve District of Will County programs, several with registration deadlines coming soon. Online registration is available on the Event Calendar at ReconnectWithNature.org.
Birding for Beginners: 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 25, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, Channahon. Learn basic bird identification skills using size, color and shape, then practice in the field during a guided hike. Ages 12 or older; free. Register by April 23.
Celebrate Trails Day Bike Ride: 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 25, Hickory Creek Preserve – Hickory Creek Junction, Mokena. Celebrate trails with an 18.5-mile roundtrip ride along the Old Plank Road Trail followed by social time. Ages 16 or older; free. Register by April 24.
Museum Campus Day: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, Isle a la Cache Museum, Romeoville. Explore all museum buildings, including the Traders Cabin and longhouse, and learn about the area’s French fur traders and Potawatomi history during this self-guided experience. All ages; free.
Nature Journaling for Adults at Isle a la Cache: 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 25, Isle a la Cache Museum. Connect creatively with nature through guided journaling exercises led by a naturalist. Ages 18 or older; free. Register by April 23.
These Books Are Made for Walkin’: 1-2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, Channahon. Discuss “The Overstory” by Richard Powers while taking a leisurely nature walk. Ages 14 or older; free. Register by April 24.
Spring Into Action: 9-11 a.m. Sunday, April 26, Rock Run Rookery Preserve, Joliet. Help clean up the Des Plaines River shoreline during this volunteer program. Ages 14 or older; free. Register by April 24.
First Time Fishing: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, Hidden Lakes Trout Farm, Bolingbrook. Learn basic fishing skills, including tackle setup, baiting and casting, with hands-on shoreline practice. Equipment provided. Ages 8 or older; $5. Register by April 29.
Four Rivers Story Trail – Lily the Pond Mermaid: 8 a.m.-sunset. Fridays through Sundays, May 1-31, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, Channahon. Read “Lily the Pond Mermaid” along an accessible 0.4-mile trail while exploring nature. All ages; free.
Where Feathers Meet the Flash Photo Contest: 8 a.m.-sunset. Fridays through Sundays, May 1-31, McKinley Woods – Kerry Sheridan Grove, Channahon. Submit photos of native birds for a chance to win prizes. Categories for adults and youth. All ages; free.
Backpack Biologists: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, May 1-31, Hidden Oaks Nature Center, Bolingbrook. Borrow a pack and explore the preserve using tools and guided activity cards. All ages; free.
Nature’s Palette Color Discovery: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, May 1-31, Plum Creek Nature Center, Crete Township. Match colors in nature and create your own artwork after exploring outdoors. All ages; free.
Lake Renwick Migratory Bird Viewing: 8 a.m.-noon Saturdays through Aug. 9, Lake Renwick Heron Rookery Nature Preserve, Plainfield. View nesting herons, egrets and cormorants during controlled access hours. All ages; free.
Meet a Beekeeper: 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 2, Plum Creek Nature Center. Learn about bees, hive care and pollination from a local beekeeper. All ages; free.
Salamander Safari at Plum Creek: noon-2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, Plum Creek Nature Center. Take a short hike to learn about local salamanders and their habitats. All ages; free. Register by April 29.
Salamander Saturday: 4-5 p.m. Saturday, May 2, Hidden Oaks Preserve, Bolingbrook. Family-friendly activities include meeting a live salamander while learning about these unique amphibians. Families of all ages; free. Register by May 1.
Seated Yoga and Seasonal Sights: 11 a.m.-noon Sunday, May 3, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center. Take part in a seated yoga session followed by a brief guided nature exploration. Ages 14 or older; free. Register by May 2.
