Will County Forest Preserve Programs
Here are the Forest Preserve District of Will County programs for the week of June 22. Online registration is available on the Event Calendar at ReconnectWithNature.org.
Wilderness Wayfinders: 9:30-11 a.m. Thursday, June 25, Plum Creek Nature Center, Crete Township. Learn how to use a map and compass before heading off trail on a woodland adventure. Ages 6-12 with a registered adult; free. Register by June 23.
Community Pride Stroll to the Bridge: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, June 26, Plum Creek Nature Center. Enjoy an affirming 3-mile hike that welcomes LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies while building community outdoors. Ages 16 or older; free. Register by June 24.
Kids Fishing Derby: 7-11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 27, Hidden Lakes Trout Farm, Bolingbrook. Young anglers ages 5-15 can compete for prizes, enjoy treats and receive giveaways during this popular fishing event. Sessions will be offered from 7-9 a.m. or 9:30-11:30 a.m. Age categories are 5-8; 9-12; and 13-15. Free. Registration required. The derby is sponsored by The Nature Foundation of Will County with a gift from Vulcan Materials Company.
Lake Renwick Migratory Bird Viewing: 8 a.m.-noon Saturdays through Aug. 9, Lake Renwick Heron Rookery Nature Preserve, Plainfield. View nesting herons, egrets, cormorants and bald eagles from the viewing platform while staff and volunteers answer questions. All ages; free.
Museum Campus Day: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 27, Isle a la Cache Museum, Romeoville. Explore the museum campus, including the Traders Cabin and Native American longhouse, during this self-guided open house. All ages; free.
These Books Are Made for Walkin’: 1-2 p.m. Saturday, June 27, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, Channahon. Discuss Jeff VanderMeer’s “Hummingbird Salamander” while enjoying a leisurely nature walk. Copies of the book are available at the Three Rivers Public Library District’s Channahon branch. Ages 14 or older; free. Register by June 26.
“Reel” Late Fishing: 7-10 p.m. Saturday, June 27, Monee Reservoir, Monee Township. Fish under the full moon, roast s’mores and enjoy an evening on the shoreline during this family-friendly night fishing program. All ages; free.
