Here are the Forest Preserve District of Will County programs for the week of Jan. 2. Online registration is available on the Event Calendar at ReconnectWithNature.org.
Creed’s Coloring Contest: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, Hidden Oaks Nature Center, Bolingbrook. Add a splash of color to your own snapping turtle by picking up the official contest coloring sheet during business hours. Entries are due by 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, and winners in four age groups will receive snapping-turtle-themed prizes. All ages; free.
Hibernation PJ Party: 10–11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, Plum Creek Nature Center, Crete Township. Celebrate animals that hunker down for winter during this cozy party featuring stories, games, music, art and more. Ages 4–12; free. Register by Tuesday, Dec. 30.
First Friday Hike: 4–5:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, Hammel Woods – Crumby Recreation Area, Shorewood. Start the new year with a brisk hike led by a naturalist and enjoy sights, sounds and signs of wildlife as the first Friday sunset of 2026 approaches. All ages; free. Register by Wednesday, Dec. 31.
Full Moon – Wolf Walk: 7–8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, O’Hara Woods Preserve, Romeoville. Learn about the January wolf moon and the fascinating animals that once called Illinois home during this guided night hike. This program is part of a full moon series with additional dates throughout 2026. All ages; free. Register by Wednesday, Dec. 31.
Breakfast with the Birds: 9–10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, Channahon. Watch resident and visiting birds at the feeders while enjoying warm beverages and muffins indoors with a naturalist available to discuss the morning’s sightings. All ages; free. Register by Friday, Jan. 2.
Bonne Année — A New Year Celebration!: 2–3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, Isle a la Cache Museum, Romeoville. Celebrate the New Year with French traditions of Illinois Country, including stories, games, music, warm drinks, king’s cake and a vintage craft to take home. Ages 6 or older; $5 per person. Register by Wednesday, Dec. 31.
Winter Waterfowl Hike: 8:30–9:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, Channahon. Join a naturalist on the trails to observe winter waterfowl and learn about their cold-weather adaptations on the busy winter river. Ages 10 or older; free. Register by Friday, Jan. 2.
