Forest Preserve District Offers Tours, Cleanups and Adventures
Here are the Forest Preserve District of Will County programs for the week of Aug. 18. Online registration is available on the Event Calendar at ReconnectWithNature.org.
Fishing for Trash: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 19-24, Hidden Lakes Trout Farm, Bolingbrook. Help Hidden Lakes Trout Farm look its best by picking up litter in the preserve. Fishing line and other debris pose serious threats to wildlife, which can become entangled in fishing line or swallow hooks or bits of plastic. Check in with the front desk for a bucket and grabbers. Fill the bucket and return it to earn a treat from The Tackle Box. All ages; free.
Joliet Iron Works Tour: 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, Joliet Iron Works Historic Site, Joliet. Explore the stone foundations of the once-thriving industrial plant that earned Joliet the nickname “City of Stone and Steel.” A naturalist will share the fascinating stories of the men and machines that worked at the site. Ages 16 or older; free. Register by Aug. 17.
River Paddle Adventure: 1-3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, Hammel Woods – Route 59 Access, Shorewood. Take on this challenging water adventure by paddling upstream and over a rapid on the DuPage River to enjoy spectacular views of the woods, then cruise back with the current. This program is for advanced paddlers, and all equipment is provided. Ages 12 or older; $20 per person. Register by Aug. 21.
Museum Campus Day: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, Isle a la Cache Museum, Romeoville. Explore the Traders Cabin, replica Native American longhouse and other buildings at Isle a la Cache Museum while learning about the Potawatomi and French fur traders who once called the area home. All ages; free.
