Lockport Shooting Suspect Detained in Iowa

On 10/29/2023, at 2:35 PM, deputies with the Will County Sheriff’s Office were sent to the 400 Block of Oak Avenue in Unincorporated Lockport Township regarding a shooting that had occurred.

When deputies arrived, they located a twenty-one-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the neck laying near the roadway.

Deputies began providing life saving measures on the victim until members of the Lockport Township Fire Protection District arrived. The victim was transported to a local area hospital in critical condition.

A witness had indicated that prior to the shooting, a physical altercation occurred between the victim and the thirty-year-old offender, Abel Corbeira. The witness indicated to deputies that Corbeira fired a revolver, striking the victim in the neck. The offender fled the scene in his vehicle, and deputies put out information to local law enforcement partners to locate the vehicle.

Detectives were able to determine that the offender had fled the area and was heading west towards the State of Iowa. The Iowa State Police were contacted regarding this incident and were advised that there was probable cause to stop the vehicle as detectives were in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant for Corbeira.

Troopers with the Iowa State Police located the vehicle traveling on Interstate 80 in Cedar County, Iowa and stopped the vehicle. Abel Corbeira was taken into custody without incident. Detectives with the Will County Sheriff’s Office obtained a no bond arrest warrant for the offense of Aggravated Battery and traveled to Iowa to speak to Corbeira. Corbeira made statements to detectives regarding his involvement in the crime. Corbeira remains in custody in Iowa, pending an extradition hearing.

As of this writing, the victim remains in critical condition at a local area hospital. The Will County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Iowa State Police for their assistance in apprehending the suspect regarding this crime. If there are any further developments regarding this incident, additional information will be provided.
