Residents had an opportunity on May 20 to learn more about a proposed roadway improvement project along Wilmington-Peotone Road during an open house hosted by the Will County Division of Transportation.

The event at the Wilton Township Community Center in Manhattan focused on the Phase One engineering study for a 9.3-mile stretch of Wilmington-Peotone Road extending from Old Chicago Road to U.S. Routes 45/52.

According to Will County officials, the study examined possible upgrades intended to improve traffic flow and safety along the heavily traveled east-west corridor, which has experienced increased traffic due to continued growth in the area.

Potential improvements discussed during the meeting included additional passing lanes, wider roadway shoulders, drainage enhancements, improved sight distances, and intersection modifications. County officials noted the project represented the first phase of planned improvements along an 18-mile portion of Wilmington-Peotone Road between Illinois Route 53 and Drecksler Road.

Transportation department staff members attended the meeting to answer questions and collect public input. No formal presentation was given, and informational exhibits remained available for attendees to review throughout the evening.

Residents who were unable to attend the meeting were also invited to submit comments online through the project website at www.wilmingtonpeotonestudy.com. Officials stated that comments submitted by June 10 would be included in the official public record for the outreach process.

Comments on social media suggested that improvements might be needed, but that nothing would fix poor driving skills and illegal lane usage.
