Dec. 4 Open House Set on U.S. 6 Improvements
A public hearing on preliminary plans for improvements to U.S. 6 in Joliet and Channahon will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in rooms 1022 and 1024 of the main campus auditorium at Joliet Junior College, 1215 N. Houbolt Road, Joliet.
The Will County Division of Transportation (WCDOT) along with their partners, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Village of Channahon, and the City of Joliet, have initiated a preliminary engineering and environmental study (Phase I) of US 6 from the I‑55 East Frontage Road to Terminal Court in Joliet and Channahon, Will County.
The purpose of this Phase I study is to evaluate existing roadway conditions, identify transportation needs, and develop the Preferred Alternative to enhance safety, traffic flow, and mobility along this key regional route.
Phase 1 is estimated to be completed in 2028. During Phase II (design engineering phase), contract plans are prepared and the necessary right-of-way is acquired. Phase III (construction phase) represents the actual construction of the improvement.
The general scope of work is anticipated to consist of:
- Modifications to roadway geometry to enhance operations and safety
- Improvements to intersections and structures along the corridor
- Addition of bicycle and pedestrian accommodations to improve multimodal accessibility and safety
