The start of the Will County Fair means so much to so many — for a variety of reasons. The fair is competition for youngsters involved in 4-H. For other farm families, it is something to look forward to — it is a way of life. It’s also a badge of honor for some, who are named best cook, baker, or photographer.
Blue ribbons provide recognition, are esteem builders, plus a means for bragging rights. They give a sense of accomplishment, whether it is raising the best pumpkin, having the prettiest crocheted doily, or raising the best-looking steer. Winning a blue ribbon at the county fair brings about a good feeling. It is like a little “thank you.”
Every year, it takes a lot of folks to put on the county fair. Some contribute hours of their own time to make each year of the fair, now in its 121st season, a success. Like so many important events, it couldn’t happen without the devotion of volunteers and annual participants.
Then, there are the patrons – the folks who enjoy walking along the midway, sampling the variety of foods, riding amusement rides, or playing games along the Midway. Others are drawn to the animal barns. For some, it is the first time they have seen farm animals or baby chicks.
In the atrium, there are bag loads of goodies to collect; Commercial information covers everything from bottled water to trinkets and tasty homemade fudge. Though the coming of the fair signals the end of summer for some, or the start of a new school year for others, it marks the final round in a very hectic county fair circuit.
For most, the coming of the Will County Fair is the last hurrah — the last family outing before the end of summer. Whatever strikes your fancy, you can find it at the Will County Fair.
