Delays Expected Following Bridge Damage at I-88 and Route 83

LANE-CLOSURE

DOWNERS GROVE, IL – To ensure public safety, the Illinois Tollway has implemented lane and ramp closures while engineers assess damage to the Illinois Route 83 Bridge over the Reagan Memorial Tollway I-88. Traffic delays are expected in the area.

According to the Illinois State Police, the underside of the Illinois Route 83 Bridge was struck by a construction excavator being hauled by a truck/trailer traveling westbound on I-88 just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27.

The following closures are currently in effect:

The ramp from westbound I-88 to southbound Illinois Route 83
One northbound lane and shoulder on Illinois Route 83
A portion of the left turn lane on northbound Illinois Route 83

These closures are necessary as the Illinois Tollway conducts a structural evaluation and coordinates next steps for repairs. The Tollway is working closely with the Illinois Department of Transportation and local municipalities. Driver safety remains the top priority as assessments and repair planning continues.

Customers traveling to southbound Illinois Route 83 are advised to seek alternate routes and traffic delays are expected on Illinois Route 83. Drivers can use 22nd Street/Cermak Road or Highland Avenue to exit from westbound I-88.
