Farm Days Gone By

Dick Attaway shares this photo of his wife Gwen’s Grandmother, Mary Pool and Grandfather, George Pool. The Pools operated The Volunteers of America mission in Joliet, from the early 1900s up to the 1950s.Their facility was located at 412 S. Chicago St. Mr. and Mrs. Pool visited farms in the Will County, area asking for donations of poultry, produce, etc. to provide meals at the mission and to distribute food to the needy. Mary and George are in the background their three children in front. The two guitar players and baby are unidentified. Gwen can remember her grandmother slaughtering chickens in the backyard, in preparation of the evening meal. They fed anyone that came to their door, but asked that in return they perform some type of chore.
