Bystander Saves Man in Submerged Car

At approximately 9:58 a.m. on April 16, 2025, the Plainfield Fire Protection District, in coordination with the Naperville Fire Department, responded to a report of a vehicle submerged in a pond with an occupant still inside.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Royal Worlington Drive and Route 59 in Naperville.
Upon arrival, Plainfield Fire Protection District crews discovered a single vehicle partially submerged in approximately six feet of water, with the driver still inside. A landscaper working nearby witnessed the vehicle enter the pond and immediately jumped into action.
The bystander entered the water and assisted the driver, who was unable to swim, by holding their head above water until emergency responders arrived.
Firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle and provided on-scene l medical evaluation and care. The driver, along with the other party involved in the accident, declined transport to the
hospital.
The incident was determined to be the result of a traffic accident that caused the vehicle to veer off the roadway and into the pond. Divers from the Plainfield Fire Protection District assisted the towing company in safely recovering the vehicle from the water.
The Plainfield Fire Protection District commends the quick actions of the bystander, whose efforts played a vital role in ensuring the driver’s safety prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.
