Nature Play Day After Hours – Hidden in Plain Sight: 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, Plum Creek Nature Center, Crete Township. Explore different ways animals blend into their surroundings for survival during January’s session of this monthly program for tots and their caregivers. Free, ages 3-5. Register by Jan. 5.
Wellness Workshop – Access to the Outdoors: 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, Sugar Creek Administration Center, Joliet. January’s workshop in this series will feature presentations by staff on the benefits of the Forest Preserve’s work to protect and enhance natural and cultural resources. Free, all ages. Register by Jan. 7.
Breakfast With the Birds: 8-9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, Channahon. View the resident birds and winter visitors from inside. Enjoy provided warm beverages and muffins or bring your own breakfast. A naturalist will talk about the birds at the feeder. Free all ages. Register by Jan. 6.
Cocoa and Joe Hike: 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, Messenger Woods Nature Preserve, Homer Glen. Bundle up, grab your favorite mug and join a naturalist for a guided hike. After the hike, return to the fire and sip a cup of cocoa or joe. Free, all ages. Register by Jan. 9.
Crafting a la Cache – Handheld Habitats: two 90-minute sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, Isle a la Cache Museum, Romeoville. Celebrate National Hobby Month by crafting a handheld habitat in an Altoids tin. All materials will be provided; bring small leftover craft items of your own to recycle and repurpose. Free, ages 5 or older. Register by Jan. 9.
Winter Waterfowl: 9-10:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, Four Rivers Environmental Education Center. Join a naturalist and fellow birders on the chilly trails and uncover the special adaptations that allow waterfowl to make Four Rivers their winter home. Free, all ages. Register by Jan. 10.
Winter Walkers – Hadley Valley: 9:30-11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, Hadley Valley – Gougar Road Access, Joliet. Trek the trails and enjoy the magic of the season with the second of eight Winter Walkers hikes scheduled for January and February in different preserves. Free, all ages. Register by Jan. 10.
