Massey’s death underscores state delay in launching mental health response program

Alejandro Lopez (22, Chicago) was arrested and is already detained at the Cook County Department of Corrections for Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Burglary (3 Counts), and Criminal Damage to Property (3 Counts).
Lopez was charged with the above listed offenses after being identified as a suspect in the
following incidents which are identified below:
• On November 13, 2024, at 9:05 a.m., Officers responded to the Scott Street parking deck (11 East Clinton Street) for a report of a past tense burglary to motor vehicle.
Officers learned that during the early morning hours of November 13, 2024, male suspects had unlawfully entered a locked BMW by damaging a rear driver’s side window and stealing a backpack and loose change from the vehicle.
The suspects arrived and exited the parking deck in an Infiniti Q50 vehicle, and the theft was caught on surveillance video. The vehicle drove through and damaged two separate stop arms that were in the down position at the entrance and exit of the parking deck.
• On November 13, 2024, at 4:27 a.m., Officers responded to BP Gas Station (1415 Plainfield Road) for a burglary in progress. Upon arrival, Officers observed that the front door of the business had been damaged. It was determined that an employee arrived to open the store and interrupted a burglary. It is believed that four male suspects arrived in a vehicle and entered the business by damaging the front door. The suspects stole two cash registers that contained over $1000.00 total after unsuccessfully attempting to steal an ATM in the business.
The suspects then fled in a vehicle, which was later identified as an Infiniti Q50.
• On November 13, 2024, at 8:44 a.m., Officers responded to Niko’s Pizzeria (20 Ohio Street) for a burglary which had appeared to have occurred in the early morning hours.
An employee discovered the burglary when arriving to open the store. The front window of the business had been shattered and two cash registers containing $1000.00 total and a computer were taken from the business. It was determined during the investigation that multiple suspects committed the burglary and fled in an Infiniti Q50 vehicle.
It is believed the suspects committed the burglary to the vehicle in the parking deck, followed by the burglary at Niko’s Pizzeria, and then followed by the burglary at the BP Gas Station before fleeing from the area.
During the course of this investigation, it was determined that the Infiniti Q50 used in these offenses was stolen from a dealership in Clarendon Hills. Detectives were notified by the Clarendon Hills Police Department that this stolen vehicle was recovered in a garage in the 2600 block of 22nd Place in Chicago.
Through collaboration with other Chicagoland law enforcement partners, Lopez was positively identified by Joliet Police Detectives as a suspect from the above listed incidents from November 13, 2024. Detectives learned that Lopez was placed into custody on November 13, 2024, by the Prospect Heights Police Department for unrelated burglary charges.
Joliet Police Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the above cases on December 10, 2024. The warrant was served to Lopez at the Cook County Department of Corrections, where he is currently incarcerated on other charges.
The Joliet Police Department wishes to thank our law enforcement partners, specifically the Clarendon Hills Police Department and the Prospect Heights Police Department.
