Officers Respond to Three Shootings on Dec. 16

Massey’s death underscores state delay in launching mental health response program

Joliet Police Officers responded to three reports of shootings that took place in the late evening hours of December 16, 2024:
On December 16, 2024, at 10:37 p.m., Officers responded to a residence in the 500 block of Second Avenue for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, Officers located nearly 10 spent shell casings in the alley behind the residence. At that time, it was believed nothing had been struck.
The resident called back about an hour later to report that an unoccupied Nissan Altima and the rear of the residence had been struck by gunfire. The residence was occupied at the time of the shooting. No injuries were reported.
On December 16, 2024, at 9:30 p.m., Officers responded to a residence in the 21000 block of Prestwick Drive in Crest Hill for a report of a shooting that had occurred earlier in the area of
Fourth Avenue and Bennett Avenue in Joliet.
Officers learned that at approximately 9:00 p.m., a Hyundai Sonata driven by a 23-year-old male with a 23-year-old female passenger was struck by gunfire while they were driving eastbound on Fourth Avenue at Bennett Avenue.
The back window was shattered, however neither the driver nor passenger was injured. The driver drove to the residence in Crest Hill and contacted police.
On December 16, 2024, at 10:55 p.m., Officers responded to the area of Fourth Avenue and Bennett Avenue for a delayed report of shots fired.
Upon arrival, Officers located an unoccupied Chevrolet Suburban parked on the street which appeared to have been damaged by multiple rounds of gunfire. Officers located over 10 spent shell casings in the street while conducting a canvas of the area. No injuries were reported. It was reported to Officers that the shots had been overheard in the area earlier in the evening.
A motive for these reported shootings is currently under investigation. At this time, it is unknown if the vehicles damaged by gunfire in the vicinity of Fourth Avenue and Bennett Avenue are from the same incident or if these incidents are related.
