Hi5 and Run Victim Identified, Driver Still at Large

Massey’s death underscores state delay in launching mental health response program

The Will County Coroner has identified the victim of the December 14 hi5 and run as Robert Redmond Jr. a 62 of Joliet.

He was pronounced deceased on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, at 10:20 p.m. at Ascension St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Joliet.

An autopsy was performed on Monday December 16, 2024. Final cause and manner will be determined following Autopsy, Police and Toxicological reports.

On December 14, 2024, at about 9:30 p.m., Joliet Police received a call of a hit and run accident involving a pedestrian. They saw a male subject (62, Joliet) lying on the sidewalk near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Chicago Street.

Witnesses provided information to the responding officers. The Joliet Fire Department responded and transported the victim, with critical injuries, to Ascension Saint Joseph Hospital.

Witnesses stated that the victim crossed Chicago Street (east bound). He was then struck by silver sedan which was traveling northbound on Chicago Street.

Officers were able to obtain CCTV video footage of the accident. The video shows a silver sedan traveling north bound Chicago Street at a high rate of speed. It also shows the victim being struck by this vehicle.

The medical staff at Ascension Saint Joseph Hospital informed the officers that the victim succumbed to the injuries he sustained.

This intersection was closed for several hours to allow the traffic reconstructionist to process the scene. The Joliet Police Traffic Unit isconducting the investigation.

A search of the silver sedan with front end damage is being conducted.

Joliet officers were able to identify the suspect vehicle. The Joliet Police received a call from the Will County Sheriff’s Police advising they located the suspect vehicle unoccupied. Officers responded to this location and towed the vehicle.
