Suspected Hostage Taker Arrested, Victim in Good Condition

On 11/22/2024, at approximately 9:40 AM deputies with the Will County Sheriff’s Office responded to an address located in the 25100 block of Diana Court in Plainfield Township for reports of a forty-two-year-old female that had been shot in the head.
While responding to the scene, deputies were advised that victim had fled from the residence and hid in a nearby vehicle.
Responding personnel were further advised that that suspect, Devin Nier (age 42) of Plainfield Township, was inside of the residence with a “hostage.”
Members of the Plainfield Police Department were first on scene and located the victim, who was bleeding from the head profusely. As additional police personnel began to arrive on scene, a perimeter was set up around the residence where the incident took place.
The victim was transported to a local area hospital in stable condition by members of the Plainfield Fire Protection District.
All traffic around the area was stopped, and a reverse 911 call was sent to area residents to shelter in place.
The Will County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team was requested to the scene in order to negotiate with the suspect to surrender himself.
Once the SWAT was on scene, the suspect Devin Nier, surrendered himself to members of the Will County Sheriff’s Office without incident.
Devin Nier was transported to the Will County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Complex for further questioning and refused to speak with detectives regarding this incident.
Detectives from the Will County Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant for the residence and located a rifle and ammunition inside of the residence.
It was later determined that the victim was not shot in the head and the injuries that she sustained in the attack were the result of her being struck in the head numerous times with what is believed to be a revolver type pistol. The “hostage” was never located, nor was the revolver that was used in the attack.
The suspect, Devin Nier, was transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility (WCADF) and charged with Aggravated Battery, and Domestic Battery.
Further charges are pending after the initial court appearance. The victim is in good condition at a local area hospital and will be released from care in the near future.
The Will County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Plainfield Police Department and the Joliet Police department for assisting the Will County Sheriff’s Office in establishing and securing a perimeter as well as shutting down the roadways in and around the area of this incident.
