Monee: Grave Marker to Honor Civil War Veteran

The previously unmarked grave of a Monee Civil War veteran soon will feature a monument honoring his service.

A new headstone provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration is being installed at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Cemetery marking the grave of Pvt. Philip Bohlander.

Born in Germany, Bohlander enlisted in the Union’s 153rd Infantry in August 1862 and served three years. St. Paul’s church records indicate Bohlander died on March 29, 1865. He left no wife or children.

This is the second of two headstones received from the VA’s National Cemetery Administration, thanks to the combined efforts of St. Paul’s Cemetery Board and Sauk Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The first was Francis Lafayette’s headstone, which was dedicated at the cemetery in October 2021.

The public is invited to attend the Grave Memorial Dedication of Philip Bohlander on Sunday, April 16, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Cemetery, 5323 W. Margaret Street, Monee.

Light refreshments will be served in the St. Paul fellowship hall following the ceremony.

“We hope you will join us in honoring this veteran who will now not be forgotten,” said Christi Holston, president of the Monee Historical Society.
